Set 2 – Insulin essentials for type 2 diabetes
This digital set will be aimed towards primary care clinicians with a special interest in diabetes to support the initiation and/or ongoing management of people living with T2D on insulin therapy.
Managing Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is complex, and transitioning to insulin therapy can be challenging for healthcare professionals. Many people with T2D eventually require insulin therapy. Although the increasing number of non-insulin-based glucose lowering means the progression to insulin may be delayed, ultimately many people with T2D will eventually require it. There is a rising prevalence of diabetes, particularly in those under the age of 40 years and with an increasing life expectancy the absolute number of individuals using insulin will undoubtedly rise. The extent to which clinicians working in primary care settings will be involved in insulin initiation and on-going management will vary and of course it is imperative that insulin therapy is only ever initiated and managed by healthcare professionals with the relevant expertise and training.
The overall objective of this set is to equip primary care practitioners with the knowledge, skills and competence to manage their patients with type 2 diabetes safely and effectively. The set will focus specifically on practical management and guiding principles.
The interactive tool is divided into clear chapters that will focus on the key topic areas:
- When to consider insulin
- Insulin types and regimens
- Prescribing insulin
- Essential education
- Further resources

Each interactive page contains links to other pages within the set, along with links to external guidance documents and references, plus handy author tips..
